Attorneys for the family of man killed by KCK officer want body camera video

Kansas City, Mo., police have completed their investigation into a Kansas City, Kan., officer who shot and killed 25-year-old Amaree’ya Henderson. The Kansas City Police Department submitted the case file to the Wyandotte County District Attorney’s office for any potential next steps. During the Unified Government’s Law Enforcement Advisory Board meeting on Wednesday, Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree’s office said he just received that file Wednesday and hasn’t had a chance to review it. Henderson’s family and attorneys are pleading for transparency. “This is my only son you took from me. I can never get back the smile that walked through my door,” said Henderson’s mother, who spoke to the advisory board via Zoom. Henderson’s mother was on FaceTime with her son the night he was killed.”He’s in his seatbelt, begging, asking, pleading why he’s being attacked,” she said. Henderson’s attorneys said on that night a couple of weeks ago, when he was pulled over at 12th and Metropolitan, Henderson was unarmed and had just completed his last DoorDash with his girlfriend in the passenger seat when they say the unnamed KCK officer escalated the traffic stop. Attorneys say the officer struggled with Henderson while he was still sitting in the driving seat. They say the officer shot through the car window with hitting shots Henderson’s left jaw and left arm that entered his chest. “How is it that those shots can ring out and he’s struggling with this officer other than the officer is outside the car and shot into the car?” asked Kay Harper Williams, attorney for the Henderson family. Henderson’s mother and family have been pleading to see the body camera from that night. Dupree says they will get a chance to see it.” Prior to today, I mean, there was no indication whatsoever that she … Read the rest

US attorney pledges ‘thorough’ investigation into Tire Nichols’s death

The US attorney investigating the death of Tyre Nichols, a Tennessee man who was beaten by police while being arrested earlier this month, promised to conduct a “thorough” and “methodical” investigation.

US Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee Kevin Ritz said at a brief press conference on Wednesday that the investigation “may take some time” as these types of federal investigations often do, but decisions will be made based on the facts and the law.

He said he had told Nichols’s family that the investigation “will be thorough. It will be methodical, and it will continue until we gather all the relevant facts. As with any other federal investigation, we will go where those facts take us.”

Memphis police officers stopped Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, on Jan. 7 for alleged reckless driving. The department said the day after that they confronted Nichols before he ran and another “confrontation” occurred ahead of his arrest.

Nichols said he was experiencing shortness of breath and was hospitalized before dying on Jan. 10.

His family and their attorneys on Monday viewed the body camera footage from the officers who arrested him. Prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing the family, said the video showed that Nichols was shocked, pepper sprayed and restrained after he was pulled over.

Attorneys said he was treated like a “human piñata” and compared the incident to the 1991 police beating of Rodney King.

Police accused Nichols’ family of causing him to suffer a heart attack and kidney failure as a result of beatings.

Tire Nichols: Memphis police body cam video of traffic stop is ‘appalling,’ attorney says after review

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump on Monday described body camera footage showing a Jan. 7 traffic stops involving the deceased Tyre Nichols, who died three days after his encounter with the Memphis police, as “appalling” and “heinous” after reviewing the video with Nichols’ family.

“It is appalling. It is deplorable. It is heinous. It is violent,” Crump said of the footage, likening it to videos of Rodney King, a Black man who was beaten by police in the 1990s.

MPD initially pulled over Nichols, 29, on Jan. 7 around 8:30 pm for “reckless driving” near Raines Road and Ross Road in Memphis, according to a press release MPD published on Jan. 8.

A “confrontation occurred” during the stop, at which point Nichols ran away from the police on foot. Officers pursued the 29-year-old and attempted to apprehend him, according to the press release.
