Peter Leary sworn in as US Attorney during the ceremony in Macon

Community residents and judges gathered this month as Peter Leary, center, was sworn in as the new US Attorney for the Middle District.

US Attorney Peter D. Leary, who grew up in Watkinsville and is a graduate of Athens Academy, took the oath of office at a ceremony at the US Courthouse in Macon in March.

Approximately 150 community members, law enforcement, judges and civic leaders attended the ceremony. Leary was appointed by President Joe Biden and confirmed by the US Senate, according to a release from Leary’s office.

“I am humbled and grateful for this opportunity to serve the people of middle Georgia,” Leary said. “There is much work to be done to curb violent crime and ensure equal justice for all. Our office commits wholeheartedly to these goals with our law enforcement and community partners.”

Leary’s daughter, Fiona Leary, and Sophie Leigh of the Girl Scouts of America and Carter Sparks of the Boy Scouts, presented the colors.

Leary’s wife, Bridget Leary, and children, daughter, Bea Leary, sons, Declan and Bere Leary, also participated in the ceremony, where Judge Hugh Lawson administered the oath of office.
