Delhi: Auto-rickshaws roped in by law body to promote free legal aid helpline | DelhiNews

NEW DELHI: In a first, the Delhi State Legal Services Authority flagged off 100 autos on Wednesday on the occasion of National Legal Services Day, which will have a toll-free number for legal aid, 1516, displayed on them with an aim to spread the message of free legal aid among the public.
the auto-rickshaws were flagged off by Delhi High Court judge Siddharth Mridul, executive chairman of DSLSA and chief guest on the occasion, in the presence of other judges of HC, including justices Talwant Singh, Neena Bansal Krishna, Sudhir Kumar Jain, Tushar Rao Gadela, Saurabh Banerjee and Amit Sharma.
Bharat Parashar, member secretary of the DSLSA said, “This is the first time we have enrolled auto-rickshaws. The authority is committed to providing free and competent legal aid to all citizens in Delhi. Our aim is to reach out to as many people who are in need of legal help, especially to the marginalized and vulnerable sections of the society. We are also organizing a national lok adalat for speedy and effective redressal of cases and traffic challenges on November 12.”
Officials from DSLSA said that the initiative would help in reaching out to the public in a better way than before.
“Auto-rickshaws and their drivers have a broad reach in the larger society as a medium of commute. Involving them by putting out stickers and instilling an awareness among the drivers will help us reach more and more people,” added the member secretary.
In the first phase, the plan is to enroll 500 autos, which will later be expanded to more across Delhi.
Four ‘mobile legal aid & advice vans’ were also tagged off by the executive chairman of the authority. The vans will travel to the length and breadth of Delhi with one legal aid counsel and a paralegal volunteer taking stops and interacting with people informing them about free legal aid schemes by the DSLSA.
A live video conferencing link for legal aid and advice was launched on the official website of the legal body through which people can interact with the counsels and volunteers roped in by the authority.
A photo exhibition was also inaugurated by the executive chairman showing the activities of the legal body at the state as well as district levels in the national capital.
